Many good businesses welcome new clients who have been referred by one of their existing clients or customers. When these businesses know that one of their existing clients or customers has referred someone else it is good business etiquette to send that client or customer a thank you letter.

Again, unless a business is small and enjoys informal relationships with its clients and customers, posting these letters would be preferable to hand delivery, though registered post is probably not needed.
